Wedding Band Tips When Booking Music

Five tips for planning your dream day wedding with the perfect wedding music.

1. Listen to audio and/or watch video of the wedding band you have in mind.

2. Communicate the details of your reception with the band leader.

3. Book early. A great wedding music band may be booked 12 to 18 months in advance.

4. After you Get a contract, be sure to read it carefully. Most wedding bands will also require a deposit to secure the date.

5. Follow up with your wedding band as you get closer to your date and make sure your wedding band knows exactly what you are thinking!

A Few Tips for Hiring Wedding Band Music

Since the wedding season is upon us, you may be interested in some ideas to consider when it comes to hiring a wedding band. 

• First. Think about how you want your reception to be remembered. Is it mostly your friends and their age group? Do you have a wide variety of ages? In some instances, a young couple gets married, but it's mostly older family and longtime family friends at the reception. Music that makes them comfortable, (genre, selection, volume, among other things) wil certainly give them pleasant memories of your event.
• Second. Think of songs that may have a special meaning for you and soon-to-be spouse. If you haven't seen the movie, "When Harry Met Sally" we highly recommend it. Not just because it features Leo Ursini in the wedding reception scene, but because it's a great movie about your future relationship. It also gives you a great idea of how music can relate to your life. Check it out!
• Third. Consider your budget. Weddings are expensive, there's no doubt. But before you cross live music off the list, check with the band and see what they can do within your budget.

As 2013 begins, it's hard to believe that we're just weeks away from the Superbowl and Mardi Gras with just a week inbetween. So be it! The 12th Night Revelers well start the festivities on January 6th as they roll out the 12th night cake.

We've got corporate events, weddings and our chance to give back with a few charitable galas all in the next few months.

Wedding Band Checklist

Every wedding has some form of entertainment, and that entertainment can sometimes make or break the evening. When you've decided on a band (or DJ) for your wedding reception, you may find the following checklist to be of some help. Remember, the more information you can communicate to the band, the smoother your evening will flow. As your planning your ideal reception entertainment, make sure to consider and discuss the following points with the band ahead of time:
• How would you like to be introduced? Some go for "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" while others prefer "Susan and Frank Jones". If the bride is inclined to keep her last name, the introduction could be "Susan Johnson and Frank Jones." A clear decision, quickly communicated to the band upon their arrival, will help the evening run smoothly or with less confusion. 
• If the bridal party is to be introduced, it's best to include a list with the exact names. If spellings of any names are uncommon, then a phonetic spelling will help.
• First dances are typically a highlight of the evening. Everyone enjoys seeing the newly wed couple on the dance floor for the first time. How long should this be? That depends. Some couples choose to dance the entire first song together while others are opened up during the first or second song to include the bride and groom's parents and ultimately the wedding party.
• Toasts are another highlight of the evening. It helps the band to know how many toasts to expect and how long they will speak. Sometimes toasts are limited to the maid of honor and best man while other times it's an open mic. If you pursue the latter, it's customary for the bride's father to have the final word. 
• Cutting the cake and bouquet/garter toss are also traditional parts of many receptions. If you're planning to make this a special occasion, let the band know and they'll provide appropriate music for those events. It's also a good time for the band to break but remember they can fill the gaps with digitized music (iPod/iPad) to keep the evening flowing.
As with corporate or charitable events, it helps for the band to know what to expect from the audience so any information you can provide such as number of guests, average age or age range, geographic background, or favorite musical genres are always a big help.

The True "New Orleans Band" Musical Experience!

When Jan & Eric Groh asked us to play for the wedding rehearal dinner they hosted at Antoine's Restaurant last night, we where happy to do so. Because a lot of the guests were coming in from Florida (and some even came from Kenner!), they said "We really want that New Orleans Band sound" for which we were happy to oblige.

The fun really began when Eddie (the head waiter) put on a show presentation of Baked Alaska and Cafe Brulot.

From then on the variety of music covered all genres and the good times rolled! A fun night and special thanks to Robert Maxwell, John Gillis and Mike Loupe; I couldn't have done it without you!
